Rattan Dining Chair — Woven Back & Caned Seat on a Bentwood Elm Frame
This rattan dining chair has the look of a classic French café chair, and the build to match. The frame is solid elm, steam-bent into the gently splayed legs and the curved braces beneath the seat — the bentwood construction that bistro chairs have been made with for over a century, and the reason they wear so well in a busy room. It’s finished in a warm, antique-toned elm that reads as lived-in rather than brand new.
The back and seat are where the texture comes in. A panel of hand-woven rattan sits in a curved, rolled top rail across the back, and the seat is finely caned to match — so the chair brings two natural materials to the table, with the woven detail doing the work a plain wooden chair can’t. Against a solid oak or a washed-wood table it adds character and a relaxed, collected feel; lined up around a dining table it pulls a whole café-style look together.
It’s practical as well as good-looking. The woven back gives a little as you lean, so it’s comfortable to sit in through a long dinner rather than a chair you only admire, and at a 47cm seat height it tucks under a standard dining table with room to spare. The natural elm and rattan suit a dining room, a kitchen or a conservatory out of direct sun — anywhere indoors you want a bit of warmth and texture rather than another flat, hard seat.
It works well as characterful spare chair in a bedroom, a hallway or a desk — as it does as a matching set around the table.
